The US military’s detention of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has triggered social media hysteria. One photograph, displaying the detained leader in athletic-casual attire, received particular focus, with numerous users expressing interest in purchasing the gray hoodie.
As the US military built momentum through air, ground, and naval operations in its strategic pressure on Venezuela, it also succeeded in capturing its leader at the year’s beginning.
And now, when searching the terms “Maduro” and “tracksuit” on X, an entire collection of posts emerges, particularly focused on his selection of gray tracksuit.
What’s more, the memeification of what’s becoming the biggest story at the beginning of 2026 has an amusing new dimension.
At the forefront is a meme shared by X user @HarryBerries in which prices of wearable items are actually priced in. A sleep mask and ear protectors are priced at $6.99 and $11.99, respectively.
However, it’s the gray fleece that has experienced the greatest surge in popularity. Searches for the garment skyrocketed, whilst humor was directed at the shade, with one user calling it “Maduro gray.”
The cherry on top arrived, however, when another person tweeted “50 shades of Maduro gray.”
Viral infochannel @Pubity disclosed on Sunday that the tracksuit Maduro was wearing when he was captured had gone out of stock in nearly every size.
A casual dictator aesthetic circulating online isn’t an entirely new concept; way back in 2012, Time magazine ran a segment pairing now-deceased Cuban leader Fidel Castro with his preference for Fila, Puma, and Nike tracksuits.
Incidentally, as the article highlighted, the Nike apparel was “barred from being sold in Cuba due to the 40-year-old US trade embargo.”
